North Shore Dance Therapy provides dance/movement therapy and counseling services to older adults and their families.
Dance/Movement Therapy is the psychotherapeutic use of movement to facilitate emotional, cognitive, physical, social, and spiritual well-being. Dance/movement therapy is a holistic body-based approach to psychotherapy that treats the body, mind, and spirit to integrate the individual.
Dance/movement therapy is a great alternative to traditional talk therapy. Individuals can use their bodies to express how they are feeling instead of using words.
The dance/movement therapist engages the individual in the therapeutic relationship through mirroring and attuning to the individuals movements, gestures, and posture in addition to verbal communication in order to get a more accurate depiction of the individuals' state.
You do not have to be a dancer to participate in dance/movement therapy. Our breath and heart beats are the most primitive form of movement that we all engage in everyday.
